The New Dance Group

The New Dance group

The New Dance group was born in 1932 and on March 26, 1933 held its First Anniversary Recital at the Hecksher Theatre in New York City. The New Dance Group gave serious young dancers a place to choreograph and perform work that was personally meaningful and a freedom to create on their own or with peers. As their dances continue to move audiences, the real influence of the New Dance Group is incalculable. But in the beginning they were all just young people with a love of movement and a dream of dancing.
The New Dance Group School opened in 1933 and actively welcomed all people, regardless of race, religion or ability to pay. The huge and simple act of opening the studio door and the democratic, creative nurturing found at the New Dance Group brought a new richness and vitality to the art form and gave the many-varied seeds of American dance a place to germinate and grow. Their legacy is in their works as well as in the minds and bodies of the generations of dancers they trained and inspired.
